When you go to the library, you expect to see friendly librarians skittering about. However, during the summer there were Newcastle Librarians turning up all over the community.
What type of events drove these librarians out of their natural habitat? Librarians were spotted conducting story times at the YMCA, attending City Council meetings and Chamber luncheons (with members of the Teen Leadership Board), and piloting the shiny, new bright red Mobile Learning Lab at the YMCA summer camp and Lake Boren.
Rest assured that you can still find your favorite librarians within the Newcastle Library walls eagerly waiting to assist you in finding your next great read or providing guidance on KCLS resources for your next research project. We also have many exciting programs to look forward to this fall, especially if you are a middle school or high school student.
Students in grades 7-12 are encouraged to join our Teen Leadership Board, which meets monthly to help plan events and programs for the Newcastle Library, Coal Creek Family YMCA and the Newcastle community.
Our new Makerspace Club kicked off during the summer. We continue to meet monthly for fun projects focused on science, technology, reading, engineering, art and math. Students in grades 6-12 have already had fun with sewing, robots and duct tape.
During our fall sessions, we will be experimenting with Makey Makey, Steampunk jewelry making and special makeup effects. For the high school student, we are offering a free six-week SAT prep series by Sandweiss, and there will be workshops on writing college essays and preparing for job interviews, as part of the KCLS Life After High School series.
