NEW — 2:30 p.m. Feb. 19, 2015

Athletes from across the state will descend on the Tacoma Dome this weekend to compete in both the Mat Classic XXVII and the state gymnastics meet.

Liberty and Hazen will both be well-represented at the state wrestling tournament Feb. 20-21. The Highlanders will send five athletes, while the Patriots will send three.

For the Patriots, Conner Small (170), Romney Noel (182) and Joanna Moreira (135) each qualified for the Mat Classic.

The Highlanders will send Anthony Scott (106), Tyson Mowrey (113), Nik Vargas (132), Derek Nichols (138) and Raven Svenson (155) to the Dome.

Gymnastics

Two gymnasts will represent Hazen at state Feb. 20-21.

Kirsten Timm will compete on the floor, beams and bars. Teammate Lizzy Platin is also set to compete on the beam.

No Liberty gymnasts qualified for state.

Swim

The King County Aquatic Center will be buzzing with activity this weekend as it hosts the state swimming championship Feb. 20-21.

The Hazen boys swim team is coming into the meet with some momentum, having narrowly defeated Kennedy to win the West Central District III swim meet.

Liberty finished third at its district meet and heads into its first state competition as a 2A team.

I’ll be down in Federal Way Saturday covering the finals of the state swim competition. Follow me on Twitter @ByChristinaCT for live updates.

Hazen’s 3A meet starts at 10 a.m., while Liberty’s 2A meet begins at 6:30 p.m.

Basketball

There’s only one local basketball team still in the postseason hunt.

The Liberty girls are still alive and set to play for the District 2/3 2A title at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 at Foss High School.

Liberty upset No. 3 ranked White River, 62-52, to make it into the title game.

The Patriots now play conference foe, Sammamish, for the district championship. The Patriots defeated the Totems twice during the regular season.

Liberty’s ultimate goal is to qualify for the 2A state championship held at the Yakima Valley SunDome March 5-7.
